Garnet & Jewel: The Bait

I woke up with my heart pounding. Was I dreaming? I could have sworn I heard something.

Silence surrounded me in the darkness of the living room. Damn it. I must have fallen asleep on the couch again. But I could have sworn I heard the thump of someone tripping up the step and the creaking of the old door as it opened.

I sat up slowly and looked around — my heart still beating fast. Take a deep breath, Garnet. It’s okay. I was talking myself through the slight panic and hoping that it was all just a dream.

There was dim light cast in from the window where I hadn’t pulled the curtain fully. But it was enough for me to scan the room without having to turn on the light yet. Hmmm. Nothing.

I was sure that I heard something. With slight trepidation, I got up and checked the door. It’s locked. See, it’s okay, Garnet. Rationalizing to myself in the middle of the night somehow seemed to help.
Still, I was puzzled, and my mind was racing. I loved this old house, but sometimes on nights like this, I couldn’t help but wonder if I wasn’t alone. Jewel always used to tease me about it. I wish she were here now.

Wide awake and not sure if I could fall back asleep, I decided to make a cup of my favorite tea — Honey Chamomile with extra honey and a dash of lemon. And tonight, a splash of bourbon.

Somewhat calmer, I sat down on the couch. But not for long.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw it, and I stared in disbelief. I thought I had misplaced it, but there it sat. There was no mistaking it.

How in the hell? I said to myself.

I stared at the gift that Jewel had given to me as bait - in the hopes we'd go back. Even if just for fun.
